디오고 마카도 Diogo Machado
a.k.a. Add Fuel(에드 퓨엘)

에드 퓨엘은 포르투갈 작가인 디오고 마차도 (Diogo Machado 1980년생)의 작가명이다. 그는 2007년부터 작품활동에만 몰두하고 있다. 대칭 패턴과 테셀레이션*이 가진 미적 가능성에 매료된 그는 2008년 자신의 이름을  에드 퓨엘(Add fuel 연료 fuel에 불을 더한다)로 바꿨고, 전통적인 타일 디자인, 특히 포르투갈 주석 유약 세라믹 아줄레주(Azulejo**)를 주 매체로 재해석하는데 집중해왔다. 

그는 작품 속에서 전통적인 장식적 요소와 현대적인 시각적 표현들을 조합, 상반된 두 가지 시각적 표현을 혼합하고자 했다. 매우 복잡한 특징과 세밀한 부분까지 주의를 기울여 궁극적으로는 새로운 형태를 선보이는 것을 목표로 한다. 

언뜻 보면, 중소형 타일 패널, 대형 스텐실, 손으로 직접 그린 벽화 및 인쇄물인 그의 작품은 고전적인 형식의 단순한 모방으로 보일 수 있지만, 자세히 들여다보면 독창적인 전통 무늬와 진한 감정을 자극하는 특징을 가진 혼란스러운 세계를 볼 수 있다.

트롱프뢰유(trompe-l'œil)***와 같은 대칭 반복과 같은 시각적 착시 기법에 의해 균형과 조화를 구현하는 그의 다층적 패턴 구성은 보는 이의 인식과 (다중)해석의 가능성을 통해 시적 리듬을 만들어낸다. 그의 작품은 옛것과 최신의 것, 유산과 현대성 사이의 정교한 상호관계를 표현한다.

 

*테셀레이션: 틈이나 포개짐이 없어 평면이나 공간을 도형으로 완벽하게 채우는 것을 테셀레이션 (tessellation) 이라고 한다. 라틴어로 tessella는 작은 정사각형을 뜻하는데, 테셀레이션의 기본 형 태는 정사각형을 이어붙이는 것이기 때문이다.

**트롱프뢰유: 트롱프 뢰유(Trompe-l'oeil)는 '눈속임'이라는 뜻을 가지 고 있는 프랑스어에서 유래된 말로 고대로부터 중세를 거쳐 현대에 이르기까지 회화, 벽화 등에 주로 사용되었 으며, 현실처럼 정밀하게 사실적으로 묘사한 그림들을 일컫는 말이다.

Add Fuel is Portuguese visual artist Diogo Machado (b. 1980). Since 2007, he has been focusing exclusively on his artistic work. In 2008, fascinated with the aesthetic possibilities of symmetrical patterning and tessellations, he shortened his moniker to Add Fuel(Add fuel to the Fire) and began redirecting his focus towards working with and reinterpreting the language of traditional tile design, and that of the Portuguese tin-glazed ceramic azulejo in particular. 

Effortlessly blending these two seemingly-irreconcilable visual idioms, his current practice seeks to combine traditional decorative elements with contemporary visual referents into new forms that reveal an impressive complexity and a masterful attention to detail. If, on the face of it, his work in small and medium-sized tile panels, large-scale stencil and freehand painted murals, and print editions might seem simply a pastiche of classic formalism, a closer inspection rewards the viewer with a chaotic world of unequivocally original motifs and characters brimming with deep emotions.

Creating balance and harmony from symmetrical repetitions, a build-up of layers, and techniques of visual illusion such as trompe-l'œil, his multi-layered patterned compositions produce a poetic rhythm that plays with the viewer's perception and the (multiple) possibilities of interpretation. His practice expresses a sophisticated dialogue between the old and the new, between heritage and modernity.
